Qld: John Mickel elected new Speaker of Qld Parliament

Labor's JOHN MICKEL has been elected the new Speaker of the Queensland Parliament.

The state's 89 MPs have been sworn in today .. with Premier ANNA BLIGH officially becoming
the nation's first elected female state leader.

Member for Logan Mr MICKEL beat Nationals leader MIKE HORAN for the role as Speaker.

Mr MICKEL will replace former Townsville MP .. Labor's MIKE REYNOLDS.

Parliament will open for business shortly after three.
