FED: Arrivals plunge 20 per cent in November
BRISBANE, Dec 20 AAP - The number of international visitors to Australia plunged more
than 20 per cent last month compared to November 2000, according to new figures.
The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics short-term arrival figures found 366,400
people arrived in the country in November, a drop of 95,000 or 20.5 per cent.
The effects of the Ansett collapse and September 11 continued to have a profound impact
with the important Japanese market dropping 39.5 per cent while New Zealand was down 31
per cent.
The United States continued its downward slide with a 19.9 per cent drop and British
arrivals were down 7.2 per cent.
The total number of short-term visitors to Australia in the 11 months to November was
around 4.3 million, a drop of 1.6 per cent compared to the same period last year.
