Fed: Small businesses get paperwork relief on GST returns

CANBERRA, Feb 23 AAP - Small businesses can breathe more easily today after changes
to the GST reporting system mean they can choose to skip the next quarterly tax return.

The government's overhaul of the Business Activity Statement (BAS) will give businesses
the option of filing a full GST return only once a year, although they will still have
to make quarterly payments.

Treasurer Peter Costello assured businesses they could stick with the current system
if they wanted to.
