Fed: Ruddock wants Carr's help in keeping gangs out

The federal government is calling on New South Wales Premier BOB CARR to help establish
objective criteria aimed at keeping potential gang members out of Australia.

Mr CARR has described the federal Immigration Department as insensitive to the problems
faced by the state's police as a result of gang crime.

But Immigration Minister PHILIP RUDDOCK says many gang members come to Australia as
minors and only become involved in gang activity after immigrating.

He's asking Mr CARR to help in the development of criteria that may help identify people
who could be of future concern.

Meanwhile, the issues behind ethnic and Aboriginal crime will be examined at a seminar
at Sydney University tomorrow.

Hosted by the Institute of Criminology and the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board, the seminar
will look at why young people from specific cultural backgrounds engage in criminal activity.
